Potter County sits on the Allegheny Plateau inside the Pennsylvania Wilds, where the 262,000-acre Susquehannock State Forest keeps the nights genuinely dark and the landscape genuinely wild. Cherry Springs State Park, one of the best stargazing spots on the East Coast, is a short drive from our front doors. So are nearly 1,000 miles of ATV and UTV trails, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, wild trout streams, and the kind of small towns that still have a diner with a counter and a pie case.

International Dark Sky

Cherry Springs State Park

Bortle Class 2 skies on a 2,300-foot plateau surrounded by Susquehannock State Forest. On clear moonless nights the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a shadow.

Trails And UTV Rentals

Denton Hill State Park

A former ski mountain reborn as a trailhead and basecamp. Denton Go rents Polaris UTVs with direct access to the 43-mile Susquehannock ATV Trail. Cabins, camping and a lodge are on site.

Lake And ATV Trailhead

Lyman Run State Park

A clear 45-acre lake ringed by maple and cherry forest. Swim from late May through mid-September, paddle on calm water, fish for stocked rainbow trout, or pick up the Susquehannock ATV Trail from the parking area.

Pine Creek Gorge Area

PA Grand Canyon

A 47-mile gorge up to 1,450 feet deep, designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968. Leonard Harrison and Colton Point overlooks sit on opposite rims. The Pine Creek Rail Trail runs 60-plus miles along the creek below.

Skywalk And Gorge Views

Kinzua Bridge State Park

Five of the original 1882 iron towers still stand where a tornado dropped them in 2003. Walk the Kinzua Skywalk out over the gorge on a glass-floored deck above the valley floor. Check DCNR for current access.

Susquehannock State Forest

The forest that keeps the nights dark and the landscape wild. Nearly 1,000 miles of ATV and UTV trails, the 85-mile Susquehannock Trail System for hikers, and wild trout streams running throughout.
